1.5mm Cable?

Hello from Scotland,

This forum looks very helpful.

I have a Husky 420 and I am going to put new cable around my garden as I have done some work. It will be easier to re lay new cable.

Can I use 1.5mm electric fence wire? I will need to use about 350m or so.

There are many types of electric fence cable, which should I use? I have looked at bare stranded galvanised, aluminium and stainless poly wire but I don't know which I need.

Can anyone offer advice? Many thanks in advance.

Usually, we use 1.5 mm2 rigid copper wire. You will find it under reference :HO7VU

@orkenny :
Where are you localised in Scotland ? (no need to be precise : for your signature + personal curiosity)
The 420x doesn't exist : 420 or 420 with Connect kit ?

@Cheminvert :

I have found 1.6mm galvanised steel wire for sale, would that work? If it is galvanised I wonder if it would be good for underground?

Hi orkenny !
Galvanised steel wire is not suitable. That wire is not isolated.
Electric fence cable is not suitable either: that cable is not isolated (otherwise animals would not be shocked by ellectrical pulses) and its metallic part is too thin (electrical pulses of electric fence has high voltage, but extremely low intensity and energy; otherwise it would hurt animals and people).

You need an isolated cupper wire as used for house electrical installation. On this forum we recommand rigid wire (i.e. one single thread of cupper) rather than flexible wire (i.e. multiple threads of cupper), because it is more resistant if, by accident, isolation is damaged. Wire cross section must be approximatively 1.5 mm2 .
